Update
I think I figured it out. Here’s what I did to make this happen:
Followed this post, ironically, to get the ball rolling. Initially, it worked well in Safari but not Firefox—for me. Turns out, the Ogg file I created had the .ogv extension. I simply changed that to .ogg and Firefox was a go. My iPhone was giving me a problem so…
I looked here and found instructions on using Handbrake for encoding the MPEG-4 file. Brilliant.
Now it should work in both Safari and Firefox as well as on iPhones. I’m curious how it will work on other smart phones. I encoded a smaller Ogg version and used my awesome mobile detection plugin to keep the size of the container manageable (another thing I originally had issues with on my phone).
Weird stuff all around. I get a gray box with an X in Firefox myself and can see the controls for a split second at first. In Safari I get the poster frame and can watch it. On my phone I get a QuickTime logo with a circle and slash through it. Back to the drawing board.
Sorry, I’m getting a blank space and the message “Your browser doesn’t support this format.” That’s on a PC with BOTH Firefox 3.0.1 and Internet Explorer.
Laurel, that explains it. You need Firefox 3.5 or higher for this to work, and Internet Explorer doesn’t support it at all. I hope they come around, but I’m not holding my breath. This is kind of a future-type feature thing but reading about it this week I wanted to try it out to learn how to implement it. Thanks a lot for checking.
