Whatever

What can I say? We all knew it, but confirmation is in. The man is a cheater. Having just finished Juicing the Game and just starting Juiced, I am hyper-aware at this point as to how steroids are affecting baseball. I’ve heard all the arguments pro and con. I even felt at one point that I shouldn’t care. But then I realized that I would care if a guy was doing cocaine every day to get up for baseball. And steroids are probably better than cocaine at making you better at the game. So that did it. Guys doing steroids need to be done. Screw ‘em. It’s cheating. I don’t care if baseball hadn’t banned them yet. They were ILLEGAL drugs then and they’re illegal drugs now. Illegal. That’s all I need. So Barry, and anyone who defends him, screw yourselves. He cheated, and you’re making justifications. Because the guy bombs.

I saw him take a coveted young pitcher live, well into the bay, and I was pissed. I was pissed because it wasn’t fair. And 40,000 people around me didn’t give a shit. Well, Giants fans, you suck anyway, but screw you too. He cheats. And save the “steroids can’t help you hit a fastball” argument and read the article. It can. Barry himself said so. Eyesight, improved. Reaction time, improved. Case, closed.

They live in a different world. It doesn’t justify or make it acceptable, but it’s reality either way. I’m sure there were plenty of people who knew about it all along, just like people who know which Hollywood celebrites are absolute jackasses in private. And if you’re going to be a baseball, you have to acknowledge it. Doesn’t make it right. But he ain’t the only one who’s done it.

I read Juiced a few months ago and, while I know many people have trashed Canseco for what he wrote, I found it to be very insightful and, I feel, honest. Why the hell else would he burn so many bridges? There’s just no point if it’s all a lie.

I know in my heart of hearts that Bonds was juicing and, perhaps, still is. That was why he took so much time off in the last couple seasons… to detox himself. But I don’t think it took. He’s no smaller than he was and he’s still bombing them.

The thing about Canseco, and I’m not far into the book yet, is that he seems to be the only one who is actually telling the truth. In Juicing the Game, Canseco’s book is talked about. Barry is talked about at length. Only when Canseco came out did anyone else, Giambi, Caminiti, whoever, actually tell the truth. So that begs the question for people who are cool with it: Why conceal it if you think it’s fine, and why do it if it doesn’t work?
