Newfound Family Photo: Downtown Reno Underwater by Indignico. All of these shots are from the early 1950’s when downtown Reno was underwater, flooded by the Truckee River.Someone came across a set of old family photos that included four from Reno underwater in the early 1950s. There are great shots in here, including the one you see on the left. Here are the links to the rest:

As always, help out if you have better information. Pretty cool stuff.

These are some great pictures. The one with the Granada Theater is easy to pin down. The Granada Theater used to be on the lot where they built the Palladio, until it was torn down in the mid 90s. So that picture is looking east along First Street, with the Mapes rising up in the background. I’m stumped with the New State Hotel, though.

I have great memories of the Granada, Crest and Majestic, all theatres downtown. Great photos, my dad has good stories about the flood.

Ahh yester’ year. Reno used to be so classy…will it ever come back (the class not the flood)? Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. Downtown was bustling with suits & well dressed business men downtown – even on a flood day. Unfortunately photos from those vantage points today are more likely to capture a bum in a Fitz hat, and a tourist with a bucket-o-nickels & 2-feet of margarita dangling from their neck (unless you shoot on 1st street where all the cool people are). Nifty archive.
