This is a major disappointment. One of the reasons Kirk gives, “My editor thinks that writing such opinions every week will conflict with my new role, and I agree with him in part,” is the exact opposite of what should be happening in newsrooms. By stopping the publication of his opinions, the wall is going up around the choices an editor is making, instead of coming down in the name of transparency. Acting like these guys don’t have opinions is self-defeating.

I wrote a column on this very subject. Now I find myself constrained by the very policy I criticized:

Like I said, Kirk, it’s disappointing that it’s just an accepted rule that you can’t have a blog. I understand how the politics of a small town works, and I know you’d get grief from people all the time because you had a blog, but in the long run, people who admit that you have an opinion and would rather give everyone the complete context of your decisions will outnumber those who don’t. I hope it happens soon, and I hope rules like the one you’re adhering to go away.
